5 Books for Working with Plants

It’s incredibly empowering to be able to make one’s medicine and even more empowering to find the medicine in your garden or yard. I see the future of herbal medicine as a holistic approach –looking at the diet, lifestyle, community, environment, and spirit. Connecting with plants for health can start in your library. Below are five books to start you on the plant journey.


The Yoga Of Herbs by David Frawley & Vasant Lad

Yoga of Herbs is an Ayurvedic guide to herbal medicine, sharing how to balance your constitution and practice self-healing. This book includes a good introduction to Ayurvedic principles, management of the doshas, and good summary charts for over 270 including 108 of the most common herbs.


Plant Spirit Medicine by Eliot Cowan

Plant Spirit Medicine helps us make friends with the spirits of nature and call upon them for assistance in all types of healing. Cowan discusses the correlation between our spirit and plant spirits in medicine, dreams, ancestors, emotions, and teachers. He also covers controversial sacred plants; and additional interviews with plant shamans from many traditions.


The China Study by T. Collin Campbell

The China Study explores the connection between diet and disease, showing you how a diet high in animal-based proteins can lead to a host of health problems. Based on scientific data, the book explains collected and analyzed large data sets to determine how different diets might correlate to certain diseases. Campbell concludes that eating plant-based foods can decrease your risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.


Farming While Black by Leah Penniman
